A good beach episode? What is this. Episode 5 managed to be actually pretty enjoyable. It broke away from the usual format of having a focus on one girl and instead let all the characters have a part of the spotlight. It was lighthearted, had it's funny moments, and even managed to add some actual story development. I always say the best part of Idolmaster is seeing the different personalities interact and develop their friendships and once again the whole cast shined. The characters are still pretty one-sided, but as we slowly learn more about each of the girls those initial perceptions are starting to fade.

The thing I love about large casts of characters is that it allows for tons of variety. As each episode passes we get to see certain characters forming stronger friendships with each other, a good example being Haruka and Chihaya, while others remain within their usual groups and deliver the funny moments we expect. Most interesting for me this week though was Takane, who is really mysterious and elegant, but we know the least about her so far. Most of the characters have revealed their motives for wanting to be idols, but Takane's is still unknown.
One of the more important parts of this episode was the new project named "Ryuugyuu Komachi" that was announced to be put together thanks to Ritsuko's hard word. What the project involves is still up in the air, but I hope it will help 765 Production get their names out to the public to help them become more well known. Up until now the cast has only done small gigs with little affect on their careers, so seeing something that might potentially launch them into stardom will be interesting.

Overall episode five was very enjoyable from a slice of life point of view. It was occasionally funny, though a couple characters were a bit annoying, but it did what any inclusive episode should by developing the character's relationships with each other but also moving the story ahead. I'm surprised really, normally in anime beach episodes are pretty terrible, at least from my experience, but this one was pretty good. It wasn't anything special, which could probably be said about the entire series, but hey, not everything can be groundbreaking!

Oh hey, it looks like we share similar opinions regarding this episode ^^. Likewise, I fear for beach plots too, not specifically because it's an excuse to flaunt fanservice, but because the gags that come with this particular type of storyline have been done so often in the past, they're becoming too hackneyed and predictable to be enjoyable. Granted, the things the girls did in this episode weren't very original to begin with but I like that they swerved away from the standard norm or the kind of scenarios we were expecting to see. It was a pleasant surprise in that sense.
